Essay marking should do more than correct grammar and spelling. The real value is in helping students see how their ideas, structure, and language work together, so the essay becomes stronger in a meaningful way.
The first thing to check is whether the essay matches the graphic organizer. If the organizer shows the plan and the essay does not follow it, the teacher should help the student notice where the structure has drifted and how to bring it back into line.
Teachers should also go beyond surface corrections. Yes, grammar and spelling matter, but marking should also focus on complete sentences, sentence flow, and transitions between ideas and paragraphs. If students only receive spelling fixes, they may miss the bigger lesson about how to write a coherent piece of work.
The revision checklist should be part of the marking process, not just an extra sheet. Teachers can use it to check whether the essay has a clear structure, logical progression, and appropriate language control, and students can also use it to see how their writing will be assessed.
When possible, teachers should review the checklist with students so they understand not only what is wrong, but also what strong writing looks like in practice. That makes marking feel less like correction and more like guided improvement.
