Inside a Mandarin lesson

Read it. Talk it through. Put it into words.

A story gives your child something to discuss. A writing task gives them someone to write for. In a one-to-one lesson, the teacher can listen to their explanation, ask a further question and work with the words they choose.

画蛇添足· I1

He finished first. Why didn’t he win?

Adding legs to a snake: an unnecessary addition spoils something that already works.

Find evidence in the story

The first person to finish drawing a snake would win. One finished first but added legs. Another completed a snake and pointed out that snakes have no legs.

Fits: a complete notice gains a joke that makes its instructions confusing.

Different: adding a missing location makes an incomplete notice useful.

A useful starting point

Build on the Chinese they already know.

Some Chinese foundation is recommended. Teachers can give simple English instructions, while lessons are taught in Mandarin. Reading, writing and culture courses have different entry points.
