Young people reading and discussing ideas in a Chinese study

Choosing a course

Does my child need to know some Chinese?

Some Chinese foundation is recommended. Teachers can use simple English instructions, but teaching is in Mandarin. Complete beginners may take the sounds-and-characters course, with the understanding that following the lesson can be challenging.

Must we start at Level 1, and can reading and writing start differently?

Choose a starting point by current ability rather than age or school grade alone. Reading and writing can begin at different levels; the trial and teacher’s report help you decide where to begin.

How do we choose between the five courses?

Consider the task your child is ready for: understanding texts, organising writing, discussing cultural stories, or linking pronunciation with characters. The advisor discusses your goals before the trial; you use the teacher’s assessment to choose a route.

Does my child have to finish pinyin before reading?

No. A child who already recognises characters and understands short texts can choose an appropriate reading course. Pronunciation and pinyin can be added according to need, rather than treated as a compulsory first course for everyone.

Inside the lessons

Are the materials in Simplified or Traditional Chinese?

Overseas lessons usually use Simplified Chinese materials. Simplified or Traditional Chinese can be arranged according to the student’s and family’s needs. Let the advisor know your preference.

How can a child complete writing in 25 minutes?

A complete piece develops across lessons. Children plan, draft and revise rather than produce a finished essay every lesson. The writing cycle spans 3, 4 or 6 lessons according to level and task.

Are the culture courses suitable if the stories are unfamiliar?

The stories and their context are part of the teaching. The important starting point is the child’s Mandarin understanding and ability to discuss what happens. The teacher can help with words and expression as they explore the story.

Do we have to complete all 312 lessons?

No. 312 lessons make up the complete course library, not a compulsory programme for each child. Courses and levels are selected around ability and goals. The 36 stratagem lessons can be chosen individually; the 6 comparison lessons are optional.

Trials and practical arrangements

What happens when we ask about a trial?

The advisor first discusses your child’s experience and goals, then arranges the trial. The teacher assesses your child and provides a report. You then choose courses around your goals. A first-trial offer is available; lessons last 25 minutes.

Can my child join on a phone?

Students use a computer or suitable tablet. A phone can be used by parents to view the lesson, but does not support the student classroom. Prepare the camera, microphone, headset and connection before the trial.

How can parents follow lessons and teacher feedback?

Use the parent account to view the classroom and follow the teacher’s lesson comments. The classroom download and login guide explains how to access the student and parent accounts.

How are lessons arranged across time zones?

Tell the advisor your city or time zone when arranging the trial. Confirm the actual date and local time together before booking, so the appointment is clear for your family.
