Chinese Idioms & Their Stories

A small phrase. A much bigger story.

Many Chinese idioms hold a whole story in four characters. Explore where an expression comes from, what it means and when it belongs.

I3 ·三人成虎

No tiger. Three reports. A changed belief.

In this old Chinese story, a minister asks a king how many reports it would take to make him believe there is a tiger in a busy market.

  1. One person reports a tiger. The king doubts it.

    A tiger in the market?

One person reports a tiger. The king doubts it.

  2. A second person repeats it. Then a third.

    The same claim, again.

A second person repeats it. Then a third.

  3. The king believes the reports, without seeing a tiger.

A rumour begins to feel real.

The king believes the reports, without seeing a tiger.

三人成虎

Repeated rumours can be mistaken for the truth.

There is no tiger in the market.

More voices. More evidence?

Your child traces how the belief changes, then asks what evidence would be needed before accepting a claim.

Choose by ability

A pathway that matches what they can do now.

A story can be heard and understood before its expression is used independently. Choose around the child’s understanding and ability to explain.

  • I1

  • I2

Compare situations and explain when an expression fits.

  • I3
